I have a very low budget but would like ot get one for a christmas gift. It doesn’t have to be big just for a small bedroom. I would rather have an HEAP, than an Ionic. Any ideas?!

I have to tell you, I use HEPA filtration a LOT. I use it in my mycology lab for microbiology applications.
For my home air filtration (there’s about 100,000 contaminant particles in one cubic foot of air, if someone is smoking there, it jumps to 1 million particles/ cubic foot), I use Holmes HEPAS that I buy at Wal-Mart. They’re still 99.97% efficient , not bad, as my lab-grade ones are 99.99%!
I use one in each room of the house and have owned about 10 of them over the years. You do have to switch the HEPA’s out every 6-12 months depending on if you have pets/kids, or don’t clean a lot…also clean the pre-filters out monthly if you can remember.
Here’s a direct link to one of the good units, and it’s only $30;
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4857817
here’s what the item description says;
This tabletop air purifier is the perfect size for your bedroom or office. It cleans up to 109 square feet of atmosphere six times an hour, so you can be certain that the air quality in your environment is the best.
Uses a HEPA activated-carbon multi-stage filter
Microban protection prevents bacterial and mold growth
Independent electronic ionizer assists in particle removal
Features a three-speed GEO motor
Weighs 6lbs
Measures 13-1/5" x 10-1/2" x 6"
Two-year limited warranty
Model No. HAP240
Anyway, I think this unit wroks very well. If I remember correctly I tested it with a petri dish, an no contaminants grew (so it’s working as advertised). But this was when new, so remember to clean the pre-filter and switch the HEPA when needed.
If you want to see pictures of the mushrooms we grow and the big HEPAs we use there see our web/blog page here;
http://www.echotech.org/greta Scroll down and you’ll see a lot of our equipment. The HEPA is actually a flowhood we built. It has some bags and jars in front of it.
Try Radio Shack. They have some great ones that are not to expensive.
Ecoquest, or Eco Quest air purifier. its a rather small unit, but people can’t even tell we smoke in our one house it’s that good. check ebay for one, that can go real high, or real cheap. but trust me, don’t go with any ol cheapie from walmart or like wise
I’ve tried them all and the best hands down is the FreshAir by Ecoquest. I don’t know how I ever lived without it. It eliminates pet and smoke odors and reduces dust…and it is powerful…it cleans up to 3000 sq. ft! I bought mine from Environmental Planning Solutions at http://www.webbwiz.com.
They let me try it at home for a week for free before purchasing it. They also gave me a discount for trading in another air purifier I had (Ionic Breeze) for it.
